Chapter Seven

SHELBY

I want to be more understanding of Bella's suggestion. It isn't in me to be enraged over the fact that she just wants to make sure no more innocent lives get hurt in this case, but to give up that easily without finding another way—that’s where she strikes a nerve.

"Shelby, I get how you feel—"

"Actually, you really don't, Bella. Last time I checked, you didn't exactly have people close to you murdered for something that you've done!" I feel my blood boil and my fists involuntarily clenching as I feel Seth's hand on my shoulder.

"You have no right to say that, Shelby! I've been through it all, with you."

At this point, maybe it’s the alcohol talking, or the way that I have not gotten a chance to fully process whatever emotions I’ve been bottling up inside. But, it’s all on the verge of coming out in a fit of rage on Bella. And that’s the last thing I want.

Taking a deep breath, I take a step back, "I need some air."

I quickly excuse myself, almost sprinting for the door as I make my way out of the apartment. I exhale loudly once I shut the door behind me. I really need something stronger than cheap wine if I’m to make it through this day.

There’s always going to be this hollowness within me. This case has already begun to change a lot. To actually acknowledge that change, is something I’ve been trying so hard to avoid. The realization of this miserable life that I’m caught up in is too much for me to be reminded of each and every day until this case is finally solved—maybe, even after that.

"Shelby, wait!" I hear Seth's voice echo from behind me as I make my way further down the hall, toward the elevator.

"I just—need a minute," I respond, not turning to look back at him as I wait for the elevator to arrive.

"Where are you going?" he asks, and as I feel his hand wrap around my forearm, I turn to look at him.

"I just need to clear my head. I'm not gonna go anywhere," I tell him.

There’s a look on his face. An expression that I no longer recognize, somewhere between concern and 'I don't believe you'. That’s something new for me.

"You can let go of my arm now," I point out and he raises an eyebrow at me.

"You shouldn't have lashed out on your friend like that. I'm not trying to tell you that you're wrong. It’s just—she's not so bad," Seth attempts to be better at communicating and for a split second, I feel like laughing.

"This is your attempt at trying to fix things? I'm really sorry for you," I tell him and he smiles, a soft smile only noticeable if you look closely.

"I'm not trying to fix anything, just don't be gone too long. I get a feeling that she doesn't really like me—"

"Right now, I'm sure she doesn't even like me," I comment.
